Restricted vent system — the #1 cause of heating errors
A restricted exhaust vent system is the most common root cause of overheating errors (tC, tC5, HC). Before replacing any heating components (thermistor, thermostat, heater), always check the vent system first. Common restrictions include: too-long duct runs, too many elbows, flex ductwork, outside hood damper stuck closed, or lint accumulation in the duct.
Three thermostats — each with different function and wire colors
This dryer has three separate thermostats: Thermostat 1 (Hi-Limit, White & Yellow wire), Thermostat 2 (Cycling, Blue & Black wire), and Thermostat 3 (85°C/25A Thermal Cut-off, Red & Black wire). All should read < 1Ω when good and ∞ when failed. Thermostat 3 is a one-time thermal cut-off that does not reset — once tripped, it must be replaced. Always identify which thermostat you are testing by wire color.
Dual heater vs Single heater configurations
This dryer platform supports both DUAL and SINGLE heater configurations. DUAL heater: test PIN 2-3 for 13Ohm and PIN 1-2 for 34Ohm. SINGLE heater: test PIN 1-3 for 10Ohm. One element of a dual heater can fail while the other works, resulting in reduced heating rather than no heating at all. Know which configuration your model has before testing.
Gas igniter should flame within 45 seconds
Gas modelsA gas dryer featuring the heater unit is designed to achieve flame within 45 seconds at 120 VAC. If ignition does not occur within this timeframe, the failure will manifest as one of three symptoms: igniter does not glow, igniter glows but gas does not ignite, or gas ignites but flame goes out. Each symptom points to different component failures.
