Clean your dishwasher filter to restore cleaning performance and prevent odors.
Why it matters#
A clogged filter is the most common cause of dishes coming out dirty or gritty. Regular cleaning keeps your dishwasher working efficiently.
What you'll need#
Tools#
- Soft brush (old toothbrush works well)
Materials#
- Dish soap
- Warm water
- Clean cloth or sponge
Steps#
1. Empty the dishwasher#
Remove all dishes and pull out the bottom rack to access the filter area on the floor of the dishwasher.
2. Locate the filter#
Look at the bottom center or back corner of the dishwasher. Most filters are cylindrical with a twist-off top or a flat mesh screen that lifts out.
3. Remove the filter#
For cylindrical filters: twist counter-clockwise and lift out. There may be a secondary flat filter underneath—remove that too. For flat filters: simply lift straight up.
4. Rinse under running water#
Hold the filter under warm running water to flush away loose debris and food particles.
5. Scrub with soapy water#
Apply a few drops of dish soap and use a soft brush to gently scrub the mesh. Work in circular motions to dislodge stuck particles. Avoid abrasive scrubbers that can damage the mesh.
6. Clean the filter housing#
While the filter is out, wipe around the filter housing with a damp cloth. Remove any debris or buildup you find.
7. Rinse thoroughly#
Rinse the filter under clean water until all soap is gone and the mesh looks clear.
8. Reinstall the filter#
Place the filter back in position. For cylindrical types, twist clockwise until it locks. Ensure it's seated properly—a loose filter won't catch debris.
Pro tips#
- Clean the filter monthly for best performance, or more often if you don't rinse dishes before loading
- If your dishwasher has a self-cleaning filter (usually a grinder), you won't have a removable filter—check your manual
- A clogged filter is the most common cause of dishes coming out dirty or gritty
- Run an empty cycle with dishwasher cleaner or a cup of vinegar after cleaning the filter
Warnings#
- Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbers on the filter mesh
- A damaged filter should be replaced—torn mesh lets food particles recirculate onto dishes
- Don't run the dishwasher without the filter in place
When to call a pro#
No professional needed for filter cleaning. However, if dishes remain dirty after cleaning the filter, the spray arms may be clogged or there could be a pump issue—consider calling an appliance repair service.
