Clean accessible areas of your air ducts to improve air quality between professional cleanings.
Why it matters#
Dust and debris in ducts reduce air quality and HVAC efficiency. Surface cleaning improves the air you breathe while full professional cleaning handles the rest.
What you'll need#
Tools#
- Screwdriver
- Vacuum with hose and brush attachment
- Soft brush
- Flashlight
Materials#
- Clean cloths
- New HVAC filter
Steps#
1. Understand the scope#
Full duct cleaning requires professional equipment. This guide covers surface cleaning of accessible areas that improves air quality between professional cleanings.
2. Turn off the HVAC system#
Shut off heating/cooling at the thermostat to prevent blowing dust while you work.
3. Remove vent covers#
Unscrew or unclip each vent cover (registers and returns) and set aside.
4. Wash vent covers#
Soak covers in warm soapy water, scrub off dust and buildup, rinse, and let dry.
5. Vacuum inside ducts#
Using your vacuum hose with brush attachment, reach into each duct opening and vacuum as far as you can reach—typically 1-2 feet.
6. Brush duct walls#
Use a soft brush to loosen dust on duct walls within reach, then vacuum again.
7. Check for visible problems#
Shine a flashlight into ducts. Look for mold, excessive debris, pest droppings, or disconnected sections.
8. Clean return air vents#
Return vents (the larger ones that pull air in) accumulate more dust. Pay extra attention to these.
9. Replace vent covers#
Once dry, reinstall all vent covers.
10. Replace the HVAC filter#
Install a fresh filter—this captures dust loosened during cleaning.
Pro tips#
- DIY surface cleaning every 6-12 months improves air quality
- Professional full duct cleaning is recommended every 3-5 years, or after renovation
- If anyone in the household has allergies or asthma, clean ducts more frequently
- Clean ducts before and after major dusty projects (sanding, renovation)
Warnings#
- Don't use water or wet cleaning inside ducts—moisture promotes mold growth
- If you see mold, stop and call a professional—mold requires specialized treatment
- Flexible ductwork can be damaged easily—be gentle with the vacuum hose
When to call a pro#
Schedule professional duct cleaning ($300-500 for a typical home) if: you see visible mold growth, there's evidence of pests in ducts, excessive debris is visible, after major renovation work, or when moving into a new home.
