Clean window AC filter

Clean your window AC filter to maintain cooling efficiency and air quality.

Clean your window AC filter to maintain cooling efficiency and air quality.

Why it matters#

A dirty filter makes your AC work harder, uses more energy, and blows dusty air. Regular cleaning keeps your unit efficient and your air clean.

What you'll need#

Tools#

  • Vacuum with brush attachment
  • Soft brush or cloth

Materials#

  • Mild dish soap
  • Warm water
  • Clean towel

Steps#

1. Turn off and unplug the AC unit#

Never clean a filter with the unit running. Unplug from the outlet for safety.

2. Locate and remove the filter#

Most window AC filters are behind the front grille. The grille typically unclips or unscrews. Slide the filter out carefully.

3. Assess the filter condition#

Hold it up to light—if you can't see through it, it's definitely time to clean. Check for damage, tears, or warping.

4. Vacuum loose debris#

Use a brush attachment to vacuum both sides of the filter, removing loose dust and debris.

5. Wash the filter#

Fill a sink or tub with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Submerge the filter and gently agitate. For stubborn buildup, let it soak for 10-15 minutes.

6. Rinse thoroughly#

Rinse with clean water until no soap remains. Soap residue can restrict airflow and attract more dust.

7. Dry completely#

Shake off excess water and let the filter air dry completely—this may take 1-2 hours. Never reinstall a damp filter.

8. Reinstall the filter#

Slide the dry filter back into position and reattach the front grille. Plug in and test the unit.

Pro tips#

  • Clean the filter every 2-4 weeks during heavy use
  • While the filter is out, wipe down the inside of the grille and visible coils with a damp cloth
  • If your filter is damaged or won't come clean, replacements are inexpensive and available at hardware stores
  • Some units have reusable filters; others have disposable ones—check your manual

Warnings#

  • Always unplug the unit before removing the filter
  • A clogged filter makes the AC work harder, increasing energy costs and reducing cooling
  • Running the AC without a filter allows dust to coat the evaporator coils, reducing efficiency

When to call a pro#

For filter cleaning, no pro needed. However, if the AC isn't cooling well even with a clean filter, or makes unusual noises, have a technician inspect the unit.
