Deep clean your carpets to remove embedded dirt and refresh your home.

Why it matters#

Regular vacuuming only removes surface dirt. Deep cleaning extracts embedded soil, allergens, and stains that accumulate over time, extending carpet life and improving indoor air quality.

What you'll need#

Tools#

  • Carpet cleaner machine (rented or owned)
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Soft brush
  • Fans (for drying)

Materials#

  • Carpet cleaning solution
  • Stain pretreater (optional)
  • Clean white towels

Steps#

1. Vacuum thoroughly#

Vacuum the entire carpet, going over each area multiple times. This removes loose dirt that would otherwise turn to mud.

2. Move furniture#

Clear the room or move furniture to one side. Place aluminum foil or plastic under furniture legs to prevent staining.

3. Pretreat stains#

Apply stain pretreater to spots and high-traffic areas. Let it sit according to product directions.

4. Fill the machine#

Add hot water and cleaning solution to the machine according to manufacturer directions. Don't use more solution than recommended—it leaves residue.

5. Test in a hidden area#

Test the cleaner on an inconspicuous spot to ensure it doesn't discolor the carpet.

6. Clean in rows#

Work in straight, overlapping rows, starting at the far end of the room and backing toward the door.

7. Make slow passes#

Move slowly to allow the machine to extract as much water as possible. Fast passes leave carpets too wet.

8. Make a dry pass#

Go over each section once more without dispensing water to extract additional moisture.

9. Increase ventilation#

Open windows and use fans to speed drying. Good airflow prevents mold and mildew.

10. Wait before replacing furniture#

Keep furniture off the carpet for 24 hours or until completely dry.

Pro tips#

  • Deep clean carpets every 12-18 months, or more often with pets or allergies
  • Clean carpets in spring or fall when you can open windows for ventilation
  • Rent a machine from a hardware store if you don't own one (~$30-50/day)
  • Don't over-wet—excessive moisture leads to mold and carpet damage

Warnings#

  • Never soak carpet—it can damage the backing and subfloor
  • Ensure carpet is fully dry before replacing furniture to prevent mold
  • Some carpets (wool, natural fibers) require special care—check manufacturer guidelines
  • Test any cleaning solution in a hidden area first

When to call a pro#

Professional carpet cleaning ($100-300 per room) is recommended for: valuable or delicate carpets, water damage restoration, persistent stains that won't respond to home treatment, or pet urine odors that have soaked into padding.
