Deep clean your grill to remove grease buildup and ensure safe, delicious cooking.

Why it matters#

Grease buildup is a fire hazard and affects food taste. Regular deep cleaning keeps your grill safe, extends its life, and makes food taste better.

What you'll need#

Tools#

  • Grill brush (brass bristles preferred)
  • Putty knife or scraper
  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Shop vacuum (optional)

Materials#

  • Dish soap
  • Warm water
  • Degreaser or oven cleaner (for heavy buildup)
  • Aluminum foil
  • Paper towels
  • Cooking oil

Steps#

1. Burn off residue#

Turn all burners to high, close the lid, and let the grill run for 15 minutes. This burns off food residue and makes it easier to scrub.

2. Turn off and disconnect gas#

Shut off burners and close the propane tank valve. Let the grill cool until warm but not hot.

3. Remove grates and burner covers#

Take out the cooking grates, heat plates/flavorizer bars, and any other removable parts.

4. Scrub the grates#

Use a grill brush to scrub the grates thoroughly. For heavy buildup, soak grates in hot soapy water for 30 minutes, then scrub.

5. Clean heat plates and flavorizer bars#

Scrape off buildup with a putty knife. Wash with soapy water and let dry.

6. Clean the firebox#

Scrape the inside walls and bottom of the firebox. Remove all loose debris—a shop vacuum helps.

7. Empty the grease trap#

Remove and empty the grease collection pan/tray. Wash or replace the drip pan liner.

8. Clean the burners#

Brush around and between burner ports with a grill brush. Check that ports aren't clogged—use a toothpick if needed.

9. Wipe exterior#

Clean the outside of the grill with soapy water or stainless steel cleaner, depending on the material.

10. Reassemble and season grates#

Replace all parts. Coat grates lightly with cooking oil to prevent rust and food from sticking.

Pro tips#

  • Deep clean 2-3 times per grilling season; quick brush cleaning after each use
  • Do the deep clean at the start and end of grilling season
  • Line the grease tray with aluminum foil for easy cleanup
  • Check gas connections annually by applying soapy water—bubbles indicate leaks

Warnings#

  • Wire bristles can break off and end up in food—use brass bristles or check carefully before cooking
  • Never use oven cleaner on grill grates—it can leave toxic residue
  • Ensure grill is fully cooled before handling parts
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby when grilling

When to call a pro#

No professional needed for cleaning. However, if burners won't light consistently, flames are yellow instead of blue, or you smell gas when the valves are closed, have the grill serviced before using again.
