Check dryer vent connection

Inspect the connection between your dryer and wall for disconnection, crushing, or lint buildup.

Inspect the connection between your dryer and wall for disconnection, crushing, or lint buildup.

Why it matters#

Dryer fires cause approximately 2,900 home fires each year. A disconnected or clogged vent is a leading cause. A two-minute check prevents disaster.

What you'll need#

Tools#

  • Flashlight
  • Screwdriver (if clamps need tightening)

Materials#

  • Metal clamp (if existing clamp is damaged)
  • Foil tape (optional)

Steps#

1. Pull the dryer away from the wall#

Carefully slide the dryer forward about 12-18 inches to see the back and inspect the connection.

2. Inspect the connection at the dryer#

Look where the transition duct connects to the 4-inch exhaust port. It should be firmly attached and secured with a metal clamp.

3. Inspect the connection at the wall#

Check where the duct connects to the wall vent fitting. This connection should also be secure with no gaps.

4. Check for crushing or kinks#

The duct should maintain its round shape. Look for any spots where it's been crushed or bent sharply—these restrict airflow.

5. Verify the duct material#

Confirm you have semi-rigid or rigid aluminum duct (silver colored). White plastic/vinyl is a fire hazard and must be replaced.

6. Look for lint accumulation#

Shine a flashlight into both ends of the duct. Visible lint buildup means it's time for a full vent cleaning.

7. Tighten any loose connections#

If connections have loosened, reattach and secure with metal worm-drive clamps. Avoid using screws—they catch lint.

8. Reposition the dryer#

Slide the dryer back, ensuring you don't crush the duct. Maintain 4-6 inches of space behind the dryer.

Pro tips#

  • Vacuum behind the dryer while it's pulled out
  • Check the exhaust port on the dryer for lint buildup
  • Consider a periscope-style vent if space is tight

Warnings#

  • A disconnected dryer vent is a serious fire hazard
  • Never use plastic or vinyl ducts—they can melt and catch fire
  • If you smell burning during dryer operation, stop and inspect immediately

When to call a pro#

Call a professional vent cleaning service ($100-200) if you find significant lint buildup inside the duct or if your dryer takes multiple cycles to dry clothes.
