Inspect electrical panel
Visually inspect your electrical panel for signs of problems.
Visually inspect your electrical panel for signs of problems.
Why it matters#
Electrical issues caught early prevent fires and expensive damage. Regular visual checks can identify warning signs before they become dangerous.
What you'll need#
Tools#
- Flashlight
Steps#
1. Approach the panel safely#
You're doing a visual inspection only. Never remove the inner cover or touch wires.
2. Check the panel exterior#
Look for rust, damage, scorch marks, or signs of overheating on the outside of the panel box.
3. Open the panel door#
Open the outer door to see the breaker switches. Do NOT remove the inner metal cover.
4. Look for tripped breakers#
Any breaker in the middle position (between ON and OFF) has tripped. Note which circuit it serves.
5. Check for signs of heat damage#
Look for melted plastic, discoloration, or scorch marks on or around any breakers.
6. Look for double-tapped breakers#
Check if any breaker has two wires connected where only one should be. This is a code violation.
7. Listen for sounds#
Put your ear near (not touching) the panel. Buzzing, crackling, or humming indicates problems.
8. Smell for burning#
Any burning or acrid smell means something is overheating—this requires immediate professional attention.
9. Feel the door (only)#
The panel door should not feel warm. Warmth indicates overheating inside.
10. Check panel labeling#
Is the circuit directory complete and accurate? Test a few circuits to verify labels match.
Pro tips#
- Inspect annually and after major storms or electrical events
- Keep 3 feet of clearance in front of the panel at all times
- All household members should know the panel location and how to shut off power
- Take a photo of your panel layout for reference during emergencies
Warnings#
- Never remove the inner cover—live wires inside carry lethal voltage
- If you see scorch marks, smell burning, or hear crackling, stop using affected circuits and call an electrician immediately
- Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels have known safety defects—consult an electrician about replacement
When to call a pro#
Call a licensed electrician if you notice: scorch marks or burning smell, buzzing/crackling sounds, warm panel door, frequently tripping breakers, double-tapped breakers, rust or moisture, or if you have a Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or other recalled panel brand. Annual professional inspections are recommended for older homes.
