Defrost Cycle Timing and Troubleshooting

The first defrost cycle after power-on takes 6 hours ± 10 minutes and defrosts both freezer and fresh food evaporators simultaneously. Subsequent defrost cycles use independent timing: freezer defrosts every 12-23 hours of compressor run time (varies by usage pattern), while fresh food defrosts every 6-11 hours. The cycle is triggered by compressor run time accumulation, NOT wall clock time. This means frequent door openings delay defrost cycles because they increase run time. Defrost completion is detected by temperature: freezer defrost must finish within 70 minutes, fresh food within 80 minutes. If heater stays on longer, the error code (FZ-DEF or FF-DEF) will display. Pause time between cycles is 12 ± 1 minute - during this time the defrost thermistor cools and the damper resets. Ice drains to a pan in the machine compartment and should exit through a drain line.

Ice Maker Water Supply Pressure Minimum Threshold

Ice makers require minimum 20 PSI water pressure to function. Symptoms of insufficient pressure include: slow water fill (more than 6 seconds), incomplete ice formation, or no water reaching ice maker. Before replacing the water inlet valve or ice maker, check home water pressure at the supply valve under the sink. Most PSI gauges (available at hardware stores) show if pressure is below 20 PSI. Low pressure should be addressed at the home's main water valve or meter.

AutoFill Pitcher Sensor False Overflow Triggers and Overflow Drain

AutoFill pitcher overflow sensor sometimes triggers 74C error when pitcher contains water but isn't truly overflowing. This happens if the float switch inside the pitcher sticks in the down position from mineral deposits or food particles. Emptying the pitcher completely and refilling from fresh water supply usually resolves it. If error returns immediately, the pitcher assembly internal sensor may have scale buildup — try filling pitcher from filtered water source.

Common misdiagnosis

Door Water Supply Tube Management

The refrigerator door has a water supply tube for the dispenser that connects via the upper hinge. When removing the door, disconnect this tube by holding both sides of the tube fitting and pulling straight out. The connection uses a quick-disconnect fitting with a locking ring tab. Push the locking ring tab inward while pulling the tube to release. When reassembling, insert the tube fitting from the hinge, then apply water pressure to ensure connection is complete. Water leaking from hinge area indicates tube is not fully seated.
