Foreign objects in drain pump are the number one cause of 5C errors
The most common items found clogging the drain pump assembly are: rubber bands, paper bills/money, cotton fibers, hair pins, and coins. These items collect inside the drain pump assembly over time. Always check for and remove foreign material before replacing the pump. The 5C error frequently does not require a new pump — just debris removal.
Frozen water causes multiple error codes in winter — check for ice before replacing parts
In winter, frozen water can trigger at least three different error codes: 4C (water supply — frozen supply line), 5C (drain — frozen drain line), and TC1/TC2 (temperature sensor — water level sensor operates without water because water is frozen). Before replacing any parts during cold weather service calls, check for ice in the water supply lines, drain lines, and inside the tub. Thaw frozen water before proceeding.
