What This Means

Heater winding open or short circuit; Bimetal thermostat failure; Temperature fuse error; Defrost does not finish (heating for >80 minutes continuously); Defrost heater housing separation

What actually causes this:

Heater element burned out or thermostat stuck closed

Feel if back of refrigerator gets warm during defrost cycle

How to Fix

  1. 1

    1. Check if defrost heater operates when in manual defrost mode

  2. 2

    2. Measure resistance of defrost heater (66/240 ohm ±10% for R-DEF)

  3. 3

    3. Check bimetal thermostat Opens at 140°F(60°C) / Closes at 104°F(40°C)

  4. 4

    4. Run manual defrost and verify heating completes within 80 minutes

  5. 5

    5. Verify system returns to cooling after defrost
