Error Code 84
Compressor motor is jammed and cannot run
Critical
Stop using immediately - risk of damage or safety issue
Also displayed as: 84
What This Means
Compressor mechanical lock — internal bearings seized; Compressor motor winding shorted or open; Insufficient voltage to motor; Inverter not providing proper PWM signals; Refrigerant over-pressurized
What actually causes this:
Internal compressor failure or mechanical seizure
First Thing to Check
Compressor should start with a soft hum — if it buzzes or makes grinding sounds, mechanical failure likely
Parts Involved
How to Fix
- 1
1. Listen for buzzing sound from compressor (indicates stall attempt)
- 2
2. Check DC voltage to compressor — should be 240V+ AC from inverter
- 3
3. Use oscilloscope to verify PWM drive signal from Inverter PCB
- 4
4. Check for oil movement through sight glass (if equipped)
- 5
5. Measure compressor winding resistance (power off) — should be 2-5 ohms per phase
- 6
6. If winding is open or shorted, compressor requires replacement
