Error Code HC

Your dryer isn't heating properly or is overheating

Critical

Stop using immediately - risk of damage or safety issue

Also displayed as: HC

What This Means

Restricted vent system causing excessive heat buildup; Thermistor failure or resistance out of range; Heater malfunction (open or shorted element); Thermostat failure; PCB malfunction in temperature monitoring circuit; Compressor terminal wiring desorption (pin connection issue)

What actually causes this:

Most often caused by a clogged exhaust vent that traps hot air inside the dryer, or the heating element has burned out.

First Thing to Check

Check your exhaust vent — disconnect it from the back of the dryer and look for lint buildup inside.

How to Fix

  1. 1

    1. Check the PCB and Thermistor

  2. 2

    2. Measure thermistor resistance: should be 10K ohm at 25 deg C (77 deg F)

  3. 3

    3. Check thermostat 1 resistance: should be < 1 ohm (infinity means replace)

  4. 4

    4. Check thermostat 2 resistance: should be < 1 ohm (infinity means replace)

  5. 5

    5. Check thermostat 3 resistance: should be < 1 ohm (infinity means replace)

  6. 6

    6. Check heater: SINGLE — 10 ohm (PIN 1-3); DUAL — 13 ohm (PIN 2-3) and 34 ohm (PIN 1-2)

  7. 7

    7. If any resistance is infinite, replace the corresponding component

  8. 8

    8. For gas models, check igniter resistance: 40-400 ohm; check gas valve coil resistances

  9. 9

    9. Operate time dry for 20 minutes after service and verify HC error does not recur
