The refrigerator defrost heater isn't warming up

What This Means

Defrost heater element shorted (0Ω reading); Defrost heater wire open circuit (∞Ω reading); Bimetal protector defective; Harness damaged or disconnected; Main PBA relay defective

What actually causes this:

The heater element burned out or the wire connection is broken

Check if frost accumulates on refrigerator evaporator — indicates heater not working

How to Fix

  1. 1

    1. Unplug refrigerator and wait 5 minutes

  2. 2

    2. Disconnect MAIN PCB CN20 wire from PCB

  3. 3

    3. Measure resistance between CN20 pins 5 and 7 with multimeter (power must be OFF)

  4. 4

    4. Should read 120Ω ± 7% (115V model) or 480Ω ± 7% (230V model)

  5. 5

    5. If 0Ω: heater short-circuited; if ∞Ω: heater wire open
